Course descriptions

The Adult courses are Japanese As Second Language courses designed for adult learners, college students, and high school students (age 14 and above). 

Adult I – Elementary Japanese 101-103

This class is an introductory course for beginners. Objects of this course are to develop basic communication skills, such as greetings, conversations for shopping, explaining schedule, inviting friends, making requests, asking permissions, talking about vacation, and so on. By the end of the year, the students will be able to give a short speech using simple grammar. The students will also learn reading and writing in three writing systems (Hiragana, Katakana and some Kanji).

Adult II – Elementary Japanese 201-203

A continuation of Japanese I, students will develop daily conversation skills (such as making a reservation for flights, seeing a doctor) as well as more reading and writing skills.

Adult III – Intermediate Japanese 301-303

This course is for students who have mastered the Elementary Japanese Courses. In addition to extensive practice in reading, writing, and conversational skills, cultural aspects are introduced to clarify the Socio-Linguistic context.

Adult IV – Advanced Japanese 401-403

This course is designed for students who have mastered the Intermediate Japanese Courses. The students will learn from readings in various topics, such as geography, history, traditional culture, and pop-culture. The students will also develop conversational skills in the Socio-Linguistic context.
